![]() After The Walt Disney Company's purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012 and the closure of LucasArts the following year, the games developed during the first two eras were discarded from the canon in 2014 and reassigned to the non-canonical Star Wars Legends label.įollowing LucasArts' closure, the rights to produce Star Wars video games were reassigned solely to Electronic Arts. During this era, graphics evolved enough for games to be able to tell complex narratives, leading to games that featured more advanced retellings of the stories of the films, with voice-overs and CGI cut scenes, as well as original titles with new narratives that were set in the same continuity as the films. Later on, Lucas took interest in the increasing success of the video game market, and decided to create his own video game development company, LucasArts, so he could have more creative control over the games and their narratives. Early licensed games, released during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras of gaming, barely featured any kind of narrative, and many were action titles that either retold the stories of the original trilogy (1977–1983) or focused on a single scene of a film. The first Star Wars games were developed by a variety of companies after Star Wars creator George Lucas licensed the rights to Star Wars video games several of these games were released under the “Lucasfilm Games” banner. Phase III, which is soon to begin, returns to the age of the Nihil to explore the consequences of their attacks - and, presumably, to reveal just how the Jedi defeated them.įorce predators known as the Nameless are the most dangerous foes of the High Republic Era. The backstory of these threats is then presented in Star Wars: The High Republic Phase II, which jumps back to 350 years before the prequels. Phase I is set 200 years before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, introducing terrifying new threats such as the Nihil, the Drengir, and the Nameless. The story of the High Republic Era has principally been told in Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The High Republic transmedia initiative. Explorers stumbled upon dangerous new threats, such as a race of dark side creatures called the Drengir, while pirate groups like the Nihil objected to the Republic's expansion and responded in force. The Republic pressed on further into the Outer Rim than ever before, with the Jedi establishing a base at Starlight Beacon, a space station that eventually became portable - but sadly didn't last long. This was an age of exploration, peaking under Chancellor Lina Soh some 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. The Jed were the guardians of this Republic, leading Pathfinder teams across the galaxy and running countless temples on planets across the Rim. This was also a time of social and political change, accompanied by an artistic and scientific renaissance Star Wars has even implied the Jedi discovered secrets of the midi-chlorians during the High Republic Era. ![]() The Sith were generally believed to be extinct, although in truth they had retreated into the shadows and were beginning to manipulate events to their benefit. The High Republic Era was a time when the Republic was bold and confident, used to peace rather than war.
